Not far from Saranda, in a glorious place with such a native name Borsh, there is the VALLEY OF WATERFALLS. Many streams that originate in the mountains merge into a real waterfall, which is an amazingly beautiful sight. In the summer heat it is so nice to relax in the shade of spreading oaks and listen to the sound of water.

Moving further into the mountains, we get to DHERMI, which is one of nine small coastal settlements in the south of Albania. This picturesque place is located almost in the middle between Saranda and the first capital of Albania — the city of Vlora. The amazing natural beauty of the clean coast of the Ionian Sea, surrounded by citrus and olive plantations, was mentioned in the works of the famous poet Horace. In general, the name of the settlement means «oak grove» in Greek. Dhermi is one of the oldest Albanian villages and is famous for its numerous Orthodox churches and chapels, which are located on the picturesque mountain slopes. The most famous are the Church of St. Stephen and St. Demetrius, built in the 12th century, or, for example, the Church of the Holy Mother of God, which dates back to the 14th century. In addition, Dhermi is famous for its beaches and the amazingly clean coast of the Ionian Sea, on which there are many modern hotels, where more and more foreign tourists vacation every year.

Not far from Dhermi there is another small village with the poetic Greek name of HIMARA. As the name suggests, this settlement was founded by the Greeks many centuries ago. That is why the ruins of an ancient fortress and several ancient monasteries have been preserved in the territory of Himara. Himara stretches for many kilometers along the Ionian coast, which, like a magnet, attracts vacationers!

The next pearl of the Albanian Riviera is certainly the fortress of Porto Palermo, located in a very beautiful place, a bay of the same name. In ancient times, this bay was known as «Panorama». This fortress is very unusual in terms of architecture, it is the so-called «covered fortress», which has no analogues in the whole of Albania! Very often this fortress is called the castle of Ali Pasha Tepelenski, but this is not quite true. In fact, the fortress was built long before Ali Pasha appeared, but was rebuilt and strengthened just during the reign of the great despot and dictator. The height of the castle walls is 20 meters, and the thickness reaches two and a half meters. The citadel of the fortress is located in an incredibly picturesque place, surrounded by mountains, greenery and the sea, which has an absolutely amazing turquoise color. Porto Palermo is often called the «Albanian Provence» because there are fields of mountain tea and thyme, which is why the air in this place is filled with amazing aromas of herbs and flowers! And just a few steps from the castle, the chapel of St. Nicholas is comfortably located, which Ali Pasha built especially for his Orthodox (and mind you, beloved!) wife Vasiliki in the 18th century.

And we continue our journey along the coast and begin to climb the mountains along a steep serpentine. A walk to the mountain pass is a real adventure, because we have to climb to a height of more than two thousand meters, when the clouds remain far below! Believe me, this is an unforgettable sight … At the very top of the mountain is the Llogara National Park, which occupies an area of more than a thousand hectares. In the Park, you can find rare species of flora and fauna. Of the plants, the most unusual is, of course, the mast pine, or flag pine, which in shape resembles the eagle from the Albanian flag! The air in Llogara is mixed: mountain and sea, which is extremely beneficial for health. At the top of the mountain there are several restaurants and hotels, as well as observation decks from which you can admire the stunning views.

In addition, the National Park is home to real reindeer, which you can feed right from your hands. In winter, Llogara gets snow, which turns this place into a real Christmas fairy tale!

Gjirokaster — the city of a thousand steps

Argirokastro (various versions of the city’s name are known) is a city located in southern Albania with a population of approximately 43,000 people. It is a historical region of Epirus, the capital of the district and county of Argirokastro. It is an ancient city that is listed as a «World Heritage Site» as «a rare, well-preserved Ottoman city built by peasants with rich land holdings.» Argirokastro is located between the Argiro Mountains and the Drino River, which is 300 m above sea level. Every 5 years, the National Folklore Music Festival is held here. Argirokastro, or Gjirokastro as Albanians call it, is the birthplace of the Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha and the famous writer Ismail Kadare. The city has been known to historians since 1336 under its Greek name, as part of Byzantine Epirus. But historians are convinced that settlements existed on the site of Gjirokastër long before that. It is believed that the slopes of the Argiro Mountains were inhabited at least two and a half thousand years ago. The fact is that just a few kilometers from the city, archaeologists discovered the ruins of a Roman amphitheater. Of course, the amphitheater could not have been built in the middle of an open field, which means that the discovery of one such theater is equivalent to finding an entire ancient city! Nevertheless, the city was first mentioned in chronicles in 1336. In the following centuries, the city repeatedly changed its name, which reflects the change of power in this territory. At different times, the city had Greek, Albanian, Ottoman names. In 1373, Gjirokastër became the center of the Albanian principality under the ruler Ajion Zenebeshi. At this time, they began to build the first houses on the slope of the hill outside the ancient fortress. In 1417 the city was captured by the Turks and already in 1431 it became the center of the sajak.

Of particular interest are the traditional Albanian houses, decorated with wooden carvings, paintings and stucco. No less interesting is the Old Bazaar quarter, which is built entirely of stone. That is why Gjirokastër is often called the stone city «or the city of a thousand steps», because the city really does look like an endless labyrinth of narrow stone streets that are as similar to each other as two peas in a pod!

In 1847, Gjirokastër became the center of the uprising against the Turkish yoke. During the Balkan War, the city was captured by the Greek army and came under Greek control. Gjirokastër was returned to Albania in 1913, and in 1914 the city became the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus, and the majority of the population were Greeks. But the Republic of Epirus did not last long, and in 1921 the city was returned to Albania again. Since the early twenties of the last century, Argirokastro has become a center of trade and the only place in Albania where real silk products were produced. Today, Gjirokastër, like Saranda, is the center of the Greek community in Albania, and the Consulate General of Greece is located here.

The main attraction of the city of Argirokastro is the castle of the same name. The fortress was built long before the first written mention of the city in chronicles and annals. The oldest part of the fortress was built around the 4th century BC. The fortress received its current appearance after the transformations in the 6th century AD. The fortress was rebuilt many times. During the reign of Ali Pasha of Tepelena, the fortress in Argirokastro became one of the most powerful fortifications in the Balkans. Initially, the fortress was used exclusively for military purposes, but over time, the need for defense inside the city disappeared, and the fortress was converted into a prison. The prison existed on the territory of the Gjirokaster fortress until 1968. After the prison was closed, a museum was created here. The clock tower was also built during the reign of Ali Pasha. The clock mechanism was damaged during the Second World War. The clock was restored only in 1968, when the First Albanian Folklore Music Festival was held in the fortress. Today, the castle is open to visitors and houses a military artillery museum, which displays a collection of items from the communist resistance of the Albanian people against the German occupation. The museum also houses a US Air Force spy plane captured during World War II.

The fortress in Gjirokaster is an amazing place! The fortress is located right above the valley and to get to the castle you will have to climb to a height of more than four hundred meters. But what picturesque views will open up from the top! Durres, Dyrrachium, Epidamnus, Drach, Durazzo… these are all the names of one city, which was once, back in the 6th century BC, founded by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth. Currently, Durres is the second largest port city in Albania, which is located just thirty kilometers from Tirana. The port of Durres was founded two thousand years ago, and today it is a modern structure with an artificial harbor, two breakwaters and eleven berths. Well, and the port embankment, more than two kilometers long, is a favorite place for an evening promenade for locals and numerous guests of the city. The city was founded in 627 BC, it was originally called the Greek word Epidamnus. The city was built in a very advantageous location, since the natural harbor was surrounded by cliffs from the sea, and by swamps from the land, which made the city virtually impregnable to enemies. After the Peloponnesian War, the city was first captured by the Illyrians, and a little later came under Roman influence. It was the Romans who gave the city a new name, Dyrrhachium, which means «two-ridged» in Greek. It was here, in Dyrrhachium, that Cicero lived in seclusion for a long time, and in 48 BC, not far from the city, the decisive battle between Caesar and Pompey took place. During the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, Dyrrhachium became the main city of New Epirus. Subsequently, after the split of the Roman Empire, the city was under the control of Byzantium, the Bulgarian Principality, and finally Italy. In the 13th century, the city officially became part of the Venetian Kingdom, at the same time the name was changed to Durazzo, and the Catholic faith began to spread in the city. In 1278, the first Dominican monastery was built here. When Durres was occupied by the Turks in the 15th century, the once flourishing city and major trading center was quickly destroyed, and the harbor was covered with sand. That is why Durres became one of the main centers of the liberation movement in Albania in 1912. And although Vlore became the first capital of independent Albania, in 1918-1920 Durres housed the country’s provisional government, and later it was here that King Ahmet Zogu’s residence was located. During Zogu’s reign, the city experienced a real economic boom, it was then that a modern port and the first public buildings were built. Today, the city’s population is about 120 thousand people and Durres can rightfully be called one of the largest economic and cultural centers of Albania.

The first thing you should pay attention to in Durres is, of course, the ancient amphitheater, which is the largest and most significant not only in Albania, but also on the entire Balkan Peninsula. The amphitheater was built at the beginning of our era during the reign of Emperor Trajan and could accommodate up to 15 thousand spectators. Only a third of the building has survived to this day, but given its age and the number of earthquakes, one can only be amazed and admire the skills of the ancient builders. Until the 6th century, gladiator fights and theatrical performances took place in the amphitheater. In the 6th century, Christianity began to gradually develop on the territory of Albania, which had a great influence on the life and everyday life of people. ,

At the top of the amphitheater there is a chapel built in the 6th century. Inside this chapel there are fragments of ancient mosaics and very beautiful frescoes that date back to the 10th-11th centuries. In addition, the crypt of the great martyr Astin, who was the first bishop in the city, is located here.

One of the most majestic buildings in the city is the Fatih Mosque, which was built in the 15th century in honor of Sultan Mehmed II (Fatih).

Durres has the largest archaeological museum, which was opened in 1951. It presents extensive collections of the Greek and Roman periods. Among the artifacts, one can especially highlight the funeral steles, stone sarcophagi, a collection of miniature busts of Venus, because the city used to be a place of worship for this goddess, and much more.

This villa was built in 1928 with funds from local merchants, who presented this castle to the king. According to the records of the ancient Roman writer Virgil, the city was founded by the ancient Greeks in the 6th century BC. Today we can see such ancient Greek structures as the acropolis and amphitheater. By the way, on the stones from which the amphitheater was built, inscriptions are perfectly preserved, which date back to the 3rd century BC! Later, in the 2nd century BC, Butrint became part of the Roman Empire, and after its split, it came under the control of Byzantium. During this period, Christianity began to spread throughout the city. The ruins of Roman baths, a beautiful forum, a vaptistrio with early Christian mosaics from the 5th century, a large Basilica and other buildings have survived to this day from the Romans and Byzantines. In the 15th century, the Venetians came to the territory of Butrint, who also made a modest contribution to the development of the city. The castle located on the top of the hill and a triangular watchtower have been preserved on the territory of the city from the Venetians. In order to go around the entire ancient city, it will take more than one hour, because its territory is huge. In addition, having climbed to the top, you can fully enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the Ionian Sea and Lake Butrint, look at the ruins of a Greek temple dedicated to the god of healing Asklepius, and also visit a small museum, which contains very interesting exhibits, including ancient Greek and ancient Roman statues, coins from different eras, ceramics and much more.

Apollonia

The second most important is the ancient city of Apollonia, which is located near the industrial center of Albania — the city of Fier. Apollonia today is one of the most visited tourist places in Albania, in addition to ancient ruins, here you can see the medieval monastery complex with the Church of St. Mary of the 14th century, as well as go to one of the best archaeological museums in the country. The city of Apollonia has been known since the 6th century BC. It was founded by the ancient Greeks, immigrants from Corinth and Corfu. Bulis

Bulis was founded at the end of the 4th century BC and got its name in honor of the Illyrian tribe of Bouli. Along with Butrint and Apollonia, Bulis was first a Greek colony, and then came under Roman rule. Bulis is not mentioned at all in Russian-language literature, so few people know about it. But in fact, it is a real open-air museum, which occupies an area of more than 30 hectares. Orikum

About 40 km from Apollonia there is another ancient city called Oricum, founded, most likely, by people from Troy. Today, on the territory of the ancient city you can see the ruins of the Orchestra, a small amphitheater, as well as parts of houses and streets that are clearly visible.

Amantia

This ancient city was founded in the 5th century BC and was for a long time the capital of the Illyrian tribe of Amantes. Today it is a large archaeological park, not far from the city of Vlora. The main finds made during excavations in Amanti are now kept in the Archaeological and National History Museum in Tirana. On the territory of Amanti, such landmarks as a stadium, a small acropolis and a Doric temple dedicated to the ancient Greek goddess Aphrodite have been preserved.

Albanopoli
